“Christ encourages you, and his love comforts you. God’s Spirit unites you, and you are concerned for others. Now make me completely happy! Live in harmony by showing love for each other. Be united in what you think, as if you were only one person. Don’t be jealous or proud, but be humble and consider others more important than yourselves. Care about them as much as you care about yourselves and think the same way that Christ thought.”

Philippians 2:1-5

What this Means

Because of what Christ has done…. – He encourages us, He loves us, and He unites us, through the cross

…We must work together as a team… by showing love, being on the same page as each other and functioning together

…with the right character… made up of humility, selflessness and care, It’s about each other more than it is you.

…And the right mind. – We must think as Christ thinks so that we can act as Christ acts.

Reflection and Application

  • In what ways does the life of Christ and the salvation that he has won for you encourage you?
  • Paul suggests several ways that we can work together as a team – loving one another, playing on the same page and functioning well together. Which of these three traits do you contribute most and least to the team? Why? How can you get stronger at these three things?
  • How’s your character? On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate yourself on the traits of humility, selflessness and care?
  • What are some practical steps that you can take to think more like Christ?

A Personal Prayer

Lord, you have encouraged us by being prepared to go to the cross for all that I have done wrong.  We thank you for your Holy Spirit that unites us around you and we pray that you will use this Spirit to bring us closer together this evening. Help us to work as a team, playing towards the same goal and in the right way. May our character on and off the field put other’s first and thus honors you. Help us to think like you in actions tonight and everyday. It is in the powerful name of Jesus that we pray. Amen.

Because of what Christ has done we must work together as a team with the right character and the right mind.
