So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. Romans 12: 1&2 (The Message Bible)

What this Means

Worship is not about singing songs in church; it’s about living life. Resting, eating, training, and playing all fit into that category. What makes worship worship is not necessarily what you do, but why you do it and who you do it for.

Therefore – Do what you do so God gets the credit.

There are many things in our culture that are detrimental to us and seek to pull us down. When we focus our attention on God we rise up. As we look up, we grow up. We must constantly ask the questions, “Is this good for me” and “Does it honor God”?

Therefore – Think about why and what you are doing before you do it.

Following God will call the best out of you. You have incredible potential to make an incredible difference with your life. Don’t ever settle, become content and waste your potential. There are always better things ahead for us.

Therefore – Don’t settle for where you are now, strive for what God has for you next.

Reflection and Application

-        What have you done today to the best of your ability? What opportunities and challenges ahead do you need to give your best too?

-        Are you playing for the name on the front of the shirt or the name on the back? Who gets the glory?

-        Choose three things you have to do soon and ask yourself why you are doing them. How could this change how you are doing them?

-        What’s the next one thing you can do to get better at being you?

A Personal Prayer

Lord, help us to honor you by the way we live our lives. Help me to do what we do not just for our own goodness, but out of gratitude for all you have given to us. Help me not to get caught up in a lot of the destructive behavior that our culture advocates, but help me to think wisely, respond appropriately and to live fully. Thank you for the incredible plans that you have for us and for our future. Help us make the next right moves today so that we can all continue to walk forward towards fulfilling our God given potential. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
