Learning to PAUSE

Rediscovering the Shepherd in Psalm 23
Wouldn’t it be nice if life came with a remote control?

There are moments we wish we could fast-forward through, moments we wish we could rewind, voices we wish we could turn up, and others we would gladly mute. But perhaps the button we use the least is pause.

Our culture constantly pushes us toward more — move faster, achieve more, stay busy, keep producing. Silence feels unproductive. Rest can feel irresponsible.

But Psalm 23 reminds us that God is not a taskmaster driving exhausted people harder. He is a Shepherd who leads, restores, protects, and walks beside His sheep. Sometimes the Shepherd’s greatest act of love is making us lie down.

Maybe souls were never meant to live at the speed of exhaustion.

P — Provides

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” — Psalm 23:1

One reason we struggle to pause is because we feel responsible for holding everything together. Yet Psalm 23 begins with a freeing reminder: God is the Shepherd, not us.
Sheep survive because they stay close to the shepherd. Their security comes from his care, not their own strength. Pausing reminds us that ultimately God is our provider.

A — Assurance

“He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters.” — Psalm 23:2

The Shepherd leads His sheep toward rest, peace, and replenishment.
Much of our exhaustion is internal — worry, pressure, fear, uncertainty. Yet when we pause, God often whispers what our souls most need to hear:
You are not alone.
I am with you.
Keep walking.
Trust Me.

U — Unto Renewal

“He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness…” — Psalm 23:3

Everyone needs restoration.
Souls grow weary. Hearts drift. Minds become cluttered. But the Shepherd restores what life depletes. He gently redirects us back onto the right paths.
Pause creates space for renewal. It allows God to realign our hearts with what matters most.

S — Safety

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.” — Psalm 23:4

The Shepherd never promised we would avoid valleys. But He does promise His presence within them.
The rod and staff symbolized protection and guidance. David’s confidence was not in the absence of trouble, but in the nearness of God.
True peace is not found in controlling everything around us. It is found in trusting the One who walks beside us.

E — Energized by Hope

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life…” — Psalm 23:6

Psalm 23 ends with hope.
The Shepherd is not only with us today — He is leading us toward eternity. Goodness and mercy pursue us, and one day we will dwell fully in His presence forever.

Pausing lifts our eyes beyond stress and striving and reminds us where the story is heading.

Maybe that is why learning to pause matters so deeply.
Because when we slow down long enough, we begin to recognize the voice of the Shepherd again.
